THE LONGEST SUNLIGHT was only slightly filtered by some high clouds. By midday the nearer clouds had resolved into distinct cumulus, while it all smeared together into a white-blue blur over the New Jersey horizon. Blinding points of light reflected off the clean orange finish of a Chevy muscle car. On the downtown 1 train, a fat drop of water fell from the overhead panel of the air conditioner, landing on a bare arm. Sun rode on the shoulders down the station stairs for the return trip. The air conditioning on the uptown train was broken, but no one even bothered to move from the sweltering car. A dusting rag left on the apartment’s wall unit vent had become damp with condensation.
